President Obama rejected a Canada to Texas oil pipeline temporarily. The Canadian Company plans to build a 1700 mile pipeline from the tar sands in Western Canada to Texas. The pipeline would pass through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. The President rejected it to have more time to study the impact of the pipeline. While Republicans are criticizing President Obama, saying the temporary jobs it would create are needed.
I understand that many people need jobs. But do we cut off our nose to spite our face? Do we rush into a project that may have a lasting impact on our environment and the people who will live around the pipeline? I think President Obama did the right thing. Don't just jump into something because it sounds good today. That's how we got into much of the mess we are dealing with now. Everybody wants something today and the hell with tomorrow. The jobs will only be temporary. Well, how long is temporary? Will there be any permanent jobs created? Then there is the threat of the Canadian Company taking its' business to the Asian market. Hmmmm, big oil, once again trying to push thru what their agenda is. Haven't we had enough of getting burned by big oil in this country already?
How safe is this pipeline? Will it be available to terrorists? What happens if there is a leak? I'm not saying that we shouldn't allow the pipeline. I'm all for jobs being created and becoming more independent. I just think we should take a step back and look at the big picture first, before signing something we might regret.
